The state legislative and budget sessions are done, at least for now, and there were some solid wins for the Adirondacks achieved over the past six months.

The Adirondack Council is pleased to announce that its 2024 Conservationist of the Year as Northeast Wilderness Trust. The Conservationist of the Year award is being presented to NEWT at the Council's Forever Wild Day celebration on July 13. NEWT is being recognized for its efforts to permanently protect forests, reconnect wildlife habitat, and reestablish wilderness areas from Maine to the Adirondack Park. The Council will also be presenting environmental and justice activist Benita Law-Diao with its Special Recognition Award at Forever Wild Day.

The Adirondack Council's Aaron Mair has donated his environmental justice papers to the Library of Congress for its new Environmental Justice collection.

The state Senate and Assembly have passed the Wildlife Crossing Act, which is great news for wildlife and people in the Empire State. The bill directs the Department of Transportation to identify good places for wildlife crossings and we will continue advocating until Gov. Kathy Hochul signs it into law.

The Essex Farm Institute, a program of the Adirondack Council, is celebrating Earth Week by announcing the ninth annual farm grants to Adirondack farmers and businesses. In 2024, the grants will help bees, pay for dam removal, increase composting, and reduce fossil fuel use among the 16 grant recipients.
