ATVs in the Adirondacks | Why We Need #ATVreformNow
Spring is optimistic; an opportunity to reconnect with nature as trees return from dormancy, waters flow with vigor, and wildlife return to their warm weather habits. Some refer to this time as “mud season,” and hikers are urged to travel lightly and avoid sensitive places until the ground dry out. For recreational all-terrain vehicle (ATV) operators, this is also a time to prepare their machines for the year and start riding. Unfortunately, there are some who misuse their ATVs on our “Forever Wild” Forest Preserve and other state lands, with detrimental impacts.

Two State Legislative Priorities for the Adirondacks | APA and ATV Reform
Spring is here, and many are pulling their hiking gear out of their closets and putting their winter coats away. Spring is a time of hope and opportunity, and there is great potential as the state Legislature resumes its session after completing the budget process and taking a brief hiatus. Why All-Terrain Vehicles and Wildlife Do Not Mix
Now that the snow has thawed and the air has warmed, for some it is time for hiking, canoeing, mountain biking, fishing. For others, it is time to ride their all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). As riders tune up their machines for the year, get gas and buy last minute supplies before leaving for their destination, it is worth considering other costs associated with this activity for which others foot the bill.

New York takes a U-turn on ATVs in the Adirondacks
Last year, Governor Cuomo"s Adirondack Park Agency released the Department of Environmental Conservation's Grass River Unit Management Plan for public comment, which if approved would permit public All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) use on the Adirondack Forest Preserve. This proposed action would run contrary to the policy of the last three administrations. This policy shift represents an emerging threat to our Adirondack legacy.

"Lingchi" or "death by a thousand cuts" was once a gruesome act that now stands as a metaphor, encouraging all of us to be wise in considering cumulative impacts of any given activity. Our public lands, roads and health continue to play host to a litany of "tiny cuts" that when viewed as a whole paint a very clear picture that shows why we must enact broad reforms to ATV legislation in this legislative session.

Expanded ATV Riding Raises Big Concerns
ATVs are a persistent problem in the "forever wild" Adirondack Forest Preserve, where they can cause severe damage to trails and off-trail areas. The Adirondack Council supports a general ban on ATV riding in the Forest Preserve, but also supports the establishment of legal riding areas on private lands and on lands where the state has purchased recreation rights.
