Help Stop Road Salt Pollution in the Park

Ask legislators to fight for road salt legislation

Amidst the COVID-19 public health crisis, we still must work on protecting clean water in the Adirondacks. The state legislature has now returned to Albany to assist those fighting COVID-19 on the frontlines but could take up other business in the near future. There is still an opportunity to pass important legislation that will help reduce road salt pollution in the Park.

This legislation (S.6824/A.8767), sponsored by Senator Betty Little and Assemblyman Billy Jones, creates an Adirondack Road Salt Reduction Task Force and Pilot Program. The bill takes a comprehensive approach in updating winter road management practices to reduce excess road salt usage, prevent drinking water well contamination, and maintain safe roadways. Drinking water across the Adirondacks will continue to be compromised if road salt pollution is not addressed now.

We need your help to ensure the passage of this legislation. Please email the bill sponsors by Friday, June 12, 2020, and tell them:

  • Thank you for championing legislation to establish an Adirondack Road Salt Reduction Task Force that will ensure that we protect private drinking wells, lakes and ponds across the Adirondack Park.
  • Please pass this legislation and urge Governor Cuomo to sign it into law.
  • Your efforts will ensure safe drinking water in the Adirondacks for current and future generations.

You can edit your letter or send as-is. Please be sure to send your letter by Friday, June 12, 2020.

Thank you!
