Enviros push for, mostly, roadless Boreas Ponds with help from Sigourney Weaver

A coalition of environmentalists, including the Adirondack Council, Adirondack Mountain Club, Citizens Campaign for the Environment and Environmental Advocates is lining up behind a plan that would keep most of the newly acquired Boreas Tract, which includes Boreas Ponds in a wilderness classification. Their proposal would allow for a road up until about a mile from the ponds, so visitors could paddle partly and portage or walk along a path the rest of the way to get there.

Competing proposals include a plan by some local officials to allow a road to the ponds, with mountain biking around the waters and a plan by Adirondack Wild to close the existing road, which would basically create an 8-mile roadless/wilderness zone around the ponds.
Two of the players are out with videos, the coalition, dubbed Be Wild NY, has a piece narrated by noted actress Sigourney Weaver who has long had a home nearby in the Long Lake Area and another by the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages/Access the Adirondacks which supports a road running to the ponds.
