Bill allowing larger ATVs on NY trails is rejected

The Daily Gazette
Monday, June 23, 2014

ALBANY — Environmental groups are pleased that state lawmakers have rejected a proposal to allow larger off-road vehicles on New York's public trails.

Sponsors of the bill said raising the weight limit of ATVs from 1,000 to 1,500 pounds would put safer, slower machines on trails and roads and provide more people with access to public land. But environmental groups said it would cause more erosion and pollution.
The measure was rejected by the state Assembly before the legislative session was adjourned Friday.

Adirondack Council Executive Director William Janeway said off-road ATVs and utility vehicles are tools for farming, logging and transportation across private lands, but don't belong on public recreation trails where people are hiking or biking.
