Adirondack Council hires staffer
By Stephen Williams

ELIZABETHTOWN -- The Adirondack Council has hired Raul "Rocci" Aguirre as its new director of conservation, the organization announced Wednesday.

Aguirre has previously held a variety of conservation positions with organizations around the Northeast, including director of land protection for the Finger Lakes Land Trust and Catskill conservation coordinator for Trout Unlimited. Most recently, he was a senior conservation projects manager with the Monadnock Conservancy of Keene, N.H.

He will begin work with the Adirondack Council on March 18.

Aguirre replaces Allison Buckley, who resigned in November to take a job with the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

“We are very pleased to welcome Rocci to the organization,” said Adirondack Council incoming Executive Director Willie Janeway. “He has extensive experience with the conservation issues facing the Adirondack Park. He has also worked in other parts of the country, including a stint with the National Park Service, so he can bring a fresh perspective as well.”

Aguirre’s conservation career began in the Adirondacks as a student at SUNY Cortland, where he completed his field work for degrees in history and outdoor recreation. He also holds a master’s degree in resource management and conservation from Antioch University of New England, in Keene, N.H.

He worked as a seasonal park ranger and forest technician with the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service from 1995 to 2003, working in national parks and national forests from Florida to California before finishing his ranger career on the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River in Pennsylvania.
