Aquatic Invasives Action Alert

Urgent: Assembly Must Pass Senate Bill 7010-B to Protect Adirondack Waters

Please send an email today!

Your emails to our state legislators on the need to protect Adirondack waters from invasive species have made a difference! We are almost there.

Senate Environmental Conservation Committee Chair Todd Kaminsky has introduced new legislation (S. 7010-B) that strengthens the current invasive species law. It authorizes the Department of Environmental Conservation to require aquatic invasive species inspections, washing, and tagging (issuing a seal to indicate a boat is clean) of boats entering state waters.

Now we need the state Assembly to introduce the same bill and get it passed! The legislation has bipartisan Adirondack support, with Senator Dan Stec (R-Queensbury) joining the bill as a co-prime sponsor.

Aquatic invasive species threaten clean water, tourism, and jobs that are essential to Adirondack communities. Once established in a waterbody, invasive species are difficult and expensive to eradicate.

We have an opportunity to strengthen the current aquatic invasive species transport law, but we must act now! Please email Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and Assemblymen Steve Englebright and Billy Jones today and tell them:

  • Please introduce and pass same-as legislation for Senate Bill 7010-B, sponsored by Senators Todd Kaminsky and Dan Stec, which grants the Department of Environmental Conservation the authority to require inspections, decontaminations, and tagging of motorized watercraft in the Adirondacks. This bill also makes the current voluntary aquatic invasive species spread prevention law permanent statewide.
  • Since 2015, 25 new invasive species infestations have been recorded in Adirondack waters, indicating that the Park’s current, free, and expansive network of boat inspection and decontamination stations is being underutilized.
  • Time is running out! We need you to act immediately before protections of New York State waters expire on June 1!

Even if you live outside New York State, you can still send an email and help win this important protection for Adirondack waters!  Thank you!

You can edit your email or send-as-is!
