Members of the new Adirondack Diversity Advisory Council were pleasantly surprised on May 16 when the Sierra Club's national board of directors elected Aaron Mair of Schenectady as its first African American president.
The next opportunity you have, walk to your bathroom and look at your personal care products. Do any of the products you use contain "microbeads?" Chances are, they do. Microbeads are plastic beads, 5mm or smaller in diameter, that are marketed to customers as offering exfoliating benefits when bathing, washing your face or brushing your teeth.
On June 19, a collaboration of art and conservation will debut at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, when Kevin Raines' 75-piece exhibit opens. Kevin's paintings blend scenic beauty with people and provide an interesting perspective on the Adirondack Park. The exhibit will be in Lake Placid for a month and move to View in Old Forge. Last week, the Adirondack Park Agency Commissioners voted unanimously to send to public review a proposed final multi-use trail plan that didn't include a controversial trail segment that crosses the Hudson River. There will now be time to review other routes that are less ecologically harmful, safer and closer to existing travel corridors.
Just when I thought we were making headway in our fight against climate change, we've hit another roadblock. The Adirondacks need to be protected from climate change now so that future generations can enjoy our Park's unique and fragile plants, waters and wildlife. We need your help to make that happen.

Today, we celebrate Adirondack Day in Albany, where the Legislative Office Building is transformed into a miniature Adirondack Park. There will be pack-baskets, samples of local food products and maybe even a real owl! This is a celebration of one of our state's greatest achievements: the creation of the Adirondack Park!
Earlier this year, the Adirondack Park Agency's (APA) Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to protect a sensitive portion of the shoreline on Great Sacandaga Lake by denying a variance to shoreline rules. The APA protected the shoreline, water quality and upheld the law and the APA regulations.
As winter dissipates, the New York State budget shows the promise of spring for the Adirondack Park. Investments in clean water and an increase in the Environmental Protection Fund will help the Adirondacks.
The New York State budget deadline of April 1 is fast approaching. Lawmakers are furiously working to come to an agreement for an on-time budget. The Adirondack Council has been a constant presence at the Capitol, representing the interests of clean water, wildlife and vibrant communities in the Park we all love.
