POSITION: Clarence Petty Conservation Intern

WHERE: Adirondack Council's Elizabethtown, NY office

TERM: Summer; 10-week commitment between mid-May to September (dependent on candidate’s schedule)

HOURS: 40 hours/week (with some flexibility)

COMPENSATION: $1,800/month

HOUSING: Housing is not provided, the Council can provide assistance with the search process.

DEADLINE: March 31, 2020. We will notify applicants by April 15, 2020 if they will be moving forward with the hiring process.

The Clarence Petty Conservation Intern position is an excellent opportunity for students and young professionals to gain experience in environmental advocacy. Based out of our Elizabethtown office in the beautiful Adirondack Park, the Conservation Intern will assist the Conservation Department with policy research and writing, advocacy efforts, and education and outreach activities. In addition, the Intern will have the opportunity to attend state agency meetings, conferences and participate in some fieldwork.

Whenever possible, the internship will be tailored to match individual interests and backgrounds to help interns achieve their future professional goals. At the end of the internship, the Intern will leave with a strong understanding of the conservation policies and politics that govern the Adirondack Park and how an environmental organization effectively carries out its mission.

We are seeking candidates with excellent writing, research and analytical skills, as well as solid interpersonal skills. An understanding of the Adirondacks is preferable but not a requirement. Please note that the Intern will be oriented on Adirondack law, policy, science and other relevant information at the beginning of the internship. 


  • Conduct research on Adirondack Park Agency land use permits and variances and Department of Environmental Conservation natural resource management plans
  • Provide general programmatic support on a wide range of Forest Preserve management issues including visitor use impacts, stewardship of park lands, recreation planning, invasive species, etc.
  • Maintain conservation databases and important public comment deadline calendars. 
  • Assist Membership and Fund Development programs with relevant administrative activities
  • Develop content for the Council’s blog
  • While limited, perform fieldwork and site visits throughout the Park as needed


  • Currently pursuing or successfully completed a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Policy, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources, or a related environmental policy/science field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and outstanding interpersonal skills 
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental issues and advocacy
  • Attentive to detail and well organized
  • Able to multi-task and respond to sudden deadlines and rapidly changing objectives
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Familiarity with GIS and GPS is useful but not required
