ELIZABETHTOWN, NY - The Adirondack Park's leading environmental organization - the Adirondack Council - has expanded its offering of Holiday Gifts that support and encourage conservation, wildlife protection and pollution prevention.

"Our most popular holiday gift offering has been our Clean Air Certificates, which help prevent acid rain. For a $50 donation you can buy and retire the rights to an entire ton of sulfur dioxide pollution, stopping that ton of air pollution from ever leaving a smokestack," said Adirondack Council Executive Director Brian L. Houseal. "We have prevented nearly 7,000 tons of acid-rain-causing pollution through this gift program since it first began."

In 1997, the Adirondack Council obtained 10,000 federal sulfur dioxide pollution allowances (a.k.a. pollution credits) through a donation to its acid rain campaign. Today, pollution allowances being sold publicly cost $700 each. "We felt we should eliminate them from the market entirely by retiring them so they would never be used," Houseal said. "For every $50 donation to the Clean Air Certificate program, we will retire one ton's worth of sulfur dioxide credits. The donor can specify whose name goes on the certificate. Lots of people have been buying them for their children and other family members. It's a great way to teach a child about the environment and show them how one modest action can have a positive impact on an entire region of the country.

"And it's a real bargain," Houseal said. "Schools and clubs that buy allowances from brokers or the government must pay the full $700 price. If they come to us, they can retire 14 tons for the cost of one. We wanted to keep the program affordable, so the greatest possible number of people would learn about acid rain and how to prevent it."

Acid rain has already destroyed the native life in more than 700 Adirondack lakes and ponds and is killing forests from Maine to Georgia. The Adirondack Council has been a leading advocate in the fight against acid rain since 1975.
