Write Today to Protect Adirondack
Wilderness
The Department of Environmental
Conservation (DEC) and Adirondack Park Agency (APA) are considering
amending the Unit Management Plan for the Moose River Plains
Wild Forest and taking other actions in the same area.
One proposal would reclassify
15,062 acres of land from Wild Forest to Wilderness. It is important
that this land be classified as Wilderness to better protect
it against motorized abuses and other damage that often happens
in the lesser protected Wild Forest areas.
DEC and APA are also considering
making a 3,605 acre "Special Management Area" near
the new Wilderness to allow float planes to fly in and out of
two lakes. While the Council supports float planes in appropriate
locations, float plane use will be the only impediment for these
lands becoming Wilderness, which DEC states is the ultimate goal.
Please email both DEC
and APA today to comment on a plan to reclassify thousands of
acres around the Moose River Plains area in the Adirondacks (near
Inlet and Old Forge).
The comment period ends Friday, September 17th.
